Retail

Retail media is not the same as customer content

They get funded from the same budget and argued about in the same meeting. They do completely different jobs, and one makes the other work harder.

The two get funded from the same budget, argued about in the same meeting, and defended with the same sentence about being closer to the purchase. They do completely different jobs, and confusing them is how brands end up doing one of them twice.

What retail media is

Advertising sold by a retailer, using its own shopper data, placed where its shoppers already are: on its site, in its app, in its emails, on screens in store, and increasingly off its own properties using its shopper segments.

Three prominent New Zealand retail-media networks are Cartology on the Woolworths side, Precision Media on the Foodstuffs side, and Market Media at The Warehouse Group.

The job it does is precise. It reaches a shopper who is already in a buying mode, at or near the moment of choice, with the ability to close the loop against sales data the retailer holds.

What customer content is

Material made by people who bought and used the product, published to their own networks, licensed to the brand.

The job it does is earlier and softer. It changes what a shopper believes about a product before they are anywhere near a shelf, and it does it through the only channel people still trust by default. Nielsen's Trust in Advertising study, across more than 40,000 consumers in 56 countries in 2021, found 88% most trust recommendations from people they know.

The difference in one line

Retail media buys the last metre. Customer content decides what the shopper is carrying into it.

Where the confusion causes damage

Spending retail media budget on awareness

Retail media is expensive per impression because it is precise. Using it to introduce a product nobody has heard of is paying a premium for targeting you are then not using.

Expecting customer content to close

The reverse mistake. A customer post is not a purchase moment, and judging it on last-click attribution will always make it look weak.

Running retail media with brand-shot creative

The most common and the most fixable. Retail media placements are small, fast and seen by a shopper mid-task. Studio creative built for a hero placement is exactly the wrong asset, and it is usually the only asset available.

How they work together

Customer content gives retail media something better to run.

The same licensed asset can appear in a retailer's on-site placement, in a supplier presentation, on a product page, and behind paid social. Full content rights make that possible without a second negotiation, which is the practical reason rights get cleared before anything is published rather than afterwards.

And the selection has already happened. Content that earned paid amplification on the open platforms did so because a real audience responded to it, which is a far better filter than a creative review.

What to measure, and where

  • Retail media: sales attributed by the retailer, share of category, incremental units. Its own data closes its own loop.
  • Customer content: verified trials, content produced, organic performance, and paid performance measured against your own advertising in the same window.

In a New Zealand campaign for Kiwicare Weed Weapon in December 2025, customer content ran at 2.78% click-through against 1.07% on the brand's own paid ads in the same campaign, at NZ$0.20 a click.

The budget question

Retail media is growing because it works and because retailers are motivated to sell it. Digital advertising revenue in New Zealand reached NZ$2.967 billion in 2025 according to IAB New Zealand, up 12%, and retail was the largest measured advertising category at NZ$675.4 million according to Nielsen Ad Intel.

None of that is an argument for spending less on it. It is an argument for not funding it out of the only budget line that produces assets it can run, and for not asking one channel to do the other one's job.

The measurement side is covered on retail sales lift, and the model itself on customer-generated content.
