Privacy policy
How we collect, use, store and share personal information, and what you can ask us to do about it. Last updated: August 2026.
theSalt operates in New Zealand and is committed to protecting your personal information. This policy explains how we handle personal information collected through thesalt.co.nz, through our community platform, and in the course of running campaigns for brands.
We comply with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and its thirteen information privacy principles. If you use this website, join our community, or work with us as a brand, this policy applies to you.
1. What we collect
We only collect personal information we actually need. What that is depends on how you deal with us.
If you contact us as a brand
- Your name and the company you work for
- Your work email address and, if you give it, your phone number
- What you are interested in, when you need it live, and the brief you describe
- The IP address the enquiry was sent from
If you register interest as a customer or creator
- Your name and email address
- Your city or region
- Your main social media handle, if you give it
- Anything else you choose to tell us in the form
- The IP address the registration was sent from
If you join the theSalt community
- Profile and lifestyle information you give us when you sign up or answer a campaign survey, which we use to match you to briefs that genuinely fit your life
- Proof of purchase you upload for a campaign, such as a receipt or an order confirmation
- Links to the content you post, and the content itself where you submit it to us
- Payment details needed to refund your purchase and pay you for content
2. Why we collect it, and how we use it
- To reply to your enquiry and talk you through what we do
- To match community members to campaign briefs that suit them
- To confirm that a product was bought and trialled, and that the content submitted belongs to the person who submitted it
- To refund purchases and pay community members for content
- To report campaign results to the brand, in aggregate rather than by named individual unless you have agreed otherwise
- To run and improve our own business, including administration, contracts and accounts
- To send you updates and marketing where you have opted in
- To meet our legal obligations and to prevent fraud
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with brands for their own marketing unless you have specifically agreed to that.
3. Who we share it with
We share personal information only where we need to, with:
- The technology providers who host our website, community platform, database and email
- Payment providers, so we can refund purchases and pay community members
- Our professional advisers, such as accountants and lawyers, where relevant
- Government or regulatory bodies, where the law requires it
When we report a campaign to a brand, the brand receives the content you posted and the results of the campaign. It does not receive your contact details unless you have agreed to that separately.
4. Sending information overseas
theSalt began in South Africa in 2010 and now operates in South Africa and New Zealand. The platform that runs campaigns and holds creator profiles is delivered from South Africa. Your personal information may therefore be held both in New Zealand and in South Africa, and may be accessible from either. It may also sit with technology providers in other countries where they operate.
Information privacy principle 12 of the Privacy Act 2020 applies when we disclose personal information to someone overseas. Before we do, we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that the recipient is required to protect the information to a standard comparable to the Privacy Act, whether through the law of that country or through the contract we have with them. South Africa has its own privacy law, the Protection of Personal Information Act 2013, which sets comparable obligations to protect personal information.
If you would rather your information was not held outside New Zealand, we cannot run a campaign for you, because the platform itself is delivered from South Africa. You can ask us at any time to delete your profile, and we will.
5. How we store and protect it
- The website and platform are served over encrypted connections
- Access to the database and to lead records is restricted to the people who need it, behind single sign-on
- Systems are kept up to date and reviewed for security issues
- Our team is briefed on how to handle personal information
No system is completely secure. If a privacy breach happens that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify the people affected and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as the Privacy Act requires.
6. Cookies and tracking
This website uses only the cookies it needs to work: a session cookie and a security token that protects forms from being submitted by someone else. We do not run advertising pixels or third-party analytics on this website.
Our community platform at app.thesalt.co.nz uses cookies to keep you signed in. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though forms and sign-in will stop working properly if you do.
7. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it, or as long as the law requires. In practice:
- Enquiries from brands are kept while there is an active conversation or relationship, and reviewed after two years of no contact
- Community member records are kept while your account is active, and deleted or de-identified after you ask us to close it
- Campaign records, including proof of purchase and payment records, are kept for seven years where tax and financial reporting law requires it
8. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you, and get a copy of it
- Ask us to correct anything that is wrong, or attach a statement if we do not agree to change it
- Withdraw your consent to marketing at any time, by using the unsubscribe link or by emailing us
- Ask us to delete information we no longer need
We will respond to a request for access or correction within 20 working days. There is normally no charge. We may need to confirm who you are before we release anything.
9. Links to other websites
This website links to other sites, including social media platforms and our own community platform. We are not responsible for how those sites handle your information. Read their privacy policies before you use them.
10. Changes to this policy
We review this policy from time to time. The current version is always the one published on this page, and the date at the top tells you when it last changed.
